Weather in conversation

Weather is a universal conversation starter in Spanish just as in English. ¿Qué tiempo hace? (What is the weather like?) is the standard question. Understanding weather vocabulary also helps with travel planning, reading forecasts, and following local news in Spanish-speaking countries.

Climate across Spanish-speaking world

Spanish-speaking countries span every climate zone from arctic Patagonia to tropical Caribbean islands to the Atacama desert. Weather vocabulary takes on different importance depending on location. In Spain, the meseta central experiences extreme heat in summer and cold in winter, while coastal areas remain mild year-round.

Seasons and weather patterns

Las estaciones (the seasons) are primavera (spring), verano (summer), otoño (autumn), and invierno (winter). Remember that seasons are reversed in South America compared to Europe and North America. When it is summer in Spain, it is winter in Argentina.
