Clothes shopping in Spanish

Shopping for clothes in Spanish-speaking countries requires knowing both vocabulary and cultural norms. Sizes differ between Spain and Latin America, and both differ from US/UK sizing. Knowing phrases like me queda grande (it is too big on me) or me queda bien (it fits well) makes fitting rooms much easier.

Regional clothing terms

Clothing vocabulary varies significantly by region. Sweater is suéter in Mexico, jersey in Spain, and chompa in Peru. Jacket can be chaqueta, chamarra (Mexico), or campera (Argentina). Jeans are vaqueros in Spain but mezclilla in Mexico and jean or jeans in most of South America.

Describing what you wear

To describe clothing in Spanish, use llevar (to wear). Llevo una camisa azul means I am wearing a blue shirt. Colors come after the noun and must agree in gender and number: zapatos negros (black shoes), falda roja (red skirt).
