Spanish verbs in the infinitive end in -AR, -ER or -IR. To conjugate in the present tense, remove the ending and add the appropriate suffix for each person. Once you learn three patterns, you can conjugate thousands of verbs.
-AR verb (to speak)
| Pronoun | Form |
|---|---|
| yo | hablo |
| tú | hablas |
| él/ella | habla |
| nosotros | hablamos |
| vosotros | habláis |
| ellos | hablan |
-ER verb (to eat)
| Pronoun | Form |
|---|---|
| yo | como |
| tú | comes |
| él/ella | come |
| nosotros | comemos |
| vosotros | coméis |
| ellos | comen |
-IR verb (to live)
| Pronoun | Form |
|---|---|
| yo | vivo |
| tú | vives |
| él/ella | vive |
| nosotros | vivimos |
| vosotros | vivís |
| ellos | viven |
Notice: yo always ends in -o. ER and IR verbs share the same endings except for nosotros (-emos vs -imos) and vosotros (-éis vs -ís). Master the AR pattern first — it covers the most verbs.
The most common Spanish verbs are irregular. These must be memorized individually, but the good news is that there are patterns within the irregulars.
to have (go-verb + stem change)
| yo | tengo |
| tú | tienes |
| él/ella | tiene |
| nosotros | tenemos |
| ellos | tienen |
to go (completely irregular)
| yo | voy |
| tú | vas |
| él/ella | va |
| nosotros | vamos |
| ellos | van |
to do/make (go-verb)
| yo | hago |
| tú | haces |
| él/ella | hace |
| nosotros | hacemos |
| ellos | hacen |
to want (e→ie stem change)
| yo | quiero |
| tú | quieres |
| él/ella | quiere |
| nosotros | queremos |
| ellos | quieren |
can/to be able (o→ue stem change)
| yo | puedo |
| tú | puedes |
| él/ella | puede |
| nosotros | podemos |
| ellos | pueden |
to know (yo irregular)
| yo | sé |
| tú | sabes |
| él/ella | sabe |
| nosotros | sabemos |
| ellos | saben |
E→IE: querer, pensar, preferir, entender. O→UE: poder, dormir, volver, encontrar. E→I: pedir, servir, repetir. The change happens in all forms EXCEPT nosotros and vosotros. This is called the "boot pattern" because if you draw a line around the changed forms, it looks like a boot.
