Personal A Deep Dive

When to use it, when to skip it. Named people, pets, nadie, alguien, and tricky edge cases.

The rule: direct object = person → add "a"

Before human direct objects, Spanish requires "a"

Veo a María. (I see María.) — person
Veo la casa. (I see the house.) — thing, no "a"
Llamo a mi hermano. (I call my brother.) — person
Llamo un taxi. (I call a taxi.) — thing

When to USE personal "a"

SituationExample
Named peopleConozco a Juan.
Pronouns referring to peopleTe vi a ti. / No conozco a nadie.
People with titlesBusco al profesor. (a + el = al)
Pets (when personified)Quiero a mi perro.
Personified thingsTemo a la muerte. (I fear death.)
Alguien, nadie, quién¿A quién viste? / No vi a nadie.

When NOT to use personal "a"

SituationExample
Things/objectsCompré el libro. (no "a")
After tener (possession)Tengo dos hermanos. (NOT a dos hermanos)
Indefinite/non-specific peopleBusco un camarero. (any waiter — generic)
After hayHay muchas personas. (NOT a muchas personas)

Tricky cases

Specific person vs generic role

Busco a un camarero. = I'm looking for a specific waiter. (I know which one.)
Busco un camarero. = I'm looking for a waiter. (any waiter will do.)
The personal "a" adds specificity!

Tener = possession → no personal a (usually)

Tengo tres hijos. (I have three children.) — no "a" (possession)
BUT: Tengo a mi madre enferma. (My mother is sick.) — emphasis/concern

Personal "a" with verbs of perception

See, hear, find + person → always needs "a"

Vi a tu hermano. (I saw your brother.)
Escuché a María cantar. (I heard María sing.)
Encontré a los niños. (I found the children.)
¿Conoces a mi jefe? (Do you know my boss?)
