Why spelling changes happen

Spanish spelling changes preserve the original pronunciation

When verb endings change, the consonant sound must stay the same. Spelling adjustments keep the pronunciation consistent across all conjugations.

C → QU (before E)

GU → GÜ: keep the "gw" sound

averiguar → averigüé (I found out) — the ü keeps the "w" sound

coger → cojo (I catch) — "ga" would sound hard, "ja" keeps the "h" sound
elegir → elijo (I choose)
proteger → protejo (I protect)

I → Y (between vowels)

Unaccented "i" between vowels becomes "y"

leer → leyendo (reading), leyó (he read)
oír → oyendo (hearing), oyó (he heard)
creer → creyó (he believed), creyendo
