Two verbs, one meaning, completely different uses
In English there is one verb "to be." In Spanish there are two: ser and estar. Using the wrong one changes the meaning of your sentence, sometimes in embarrassing ways. The good news: the rules are consistent and learnable.
SER
Identity, origin, permanent traits
- 🪪 Identity: Soy profesor (I am a teacher)
- 🌍 Origin: Ella es de México (She is from Mexico)
- 🎨 Traits: La casa es grande (The house is big)
- ⏰ Time: Son las tres (It is three o'clock)
- 💎 Material: La mesa es de madera (The table is made of wood)
- 🎭 Events: La fiesta es en mi casa (The party is at my house)
- 💰 Price: Son 20 euros (It is 20 euros)
- 🔗 Possession: El libro es de María (The book is María's)
ESTAR
Location, condition, temporary states
- 📍 Location: Estoy en Madrid (I am in Madrid)
- 😊 Mood: Estoy feliz (I am happy right now)
- 🤒 Health: Está enfermo (He is sick)
- 🌡️ Condition: La comida está fría (The food is cold)
- 📐 Position: El libro está en la mesa (The book is on the table)
- 🔄 Progressive: Estoy comiendo (I am eating)
- 💀 Dead/alive: Está muerto (He is dead)
- 💍 Relationship: Estoy casado (I am married)
The golden ruleSER = what something IS (essence). ESTAR = how something IS or where it IS (state/location). Think: SER for the permanent, ESTAR for the temporary. But careful — "dead" is permanent yet uses ESTAR because it describes a state of being.
