Creates abstract nouns from adjectives

Very common pattern for expressing opinions

Lo interesante es que nadie lo sabía. (The interesting thing is nobody knew.)
Lo difícil es empezar. (The hard part is starting.)
Lo peor es que no puedo hacer nada. (The worst part is I can't do anything.)

Lo + adjective/adverb + que = how ... (exclamatory)

Expresses surprise or emphasis about degree

No sabes lo difícil que es. (You don't know how hard it is.)
Mira lo grande que está. (Look how big he's gotten.)
Me sorprende lo bien que habla. (I'm surprised at how well she speaks.)

Lo que = what / the thing that

Refers to an idea, not a specific noun

Lo que dices es verdad. (What you say is true.)
